Himachal Pradesh
|
About Himachal Pradesh: Situated in North India, Himachal Pradesh (Abode of Snow) is surrounded by Jammu & Kashmir on the north; Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh to the south; Uttaranchal to the south east and the Chinese territory of Tibet to the east.
The state is mostly covered by the low Shivalik hill range towards the south and the dramatically high trans-Himalayan ranges as you go north.
This geography and the resultant cool-to-snowy climate, define Himachal tourist attractions as well; in fact, tourism and apple growing run the economy of the state.
Some major tourist attractions in Himachal Pradesh are:
Shimla: Once the summer-capital of British India, it is now the capital of the state. Although, a little overcrowded now-a-days, the city still retains its charm and still favorite with the tourists.
Manali: By virtue of the splendid scenery, this is more famous as an idyllic honeymoon destination. It serves as the gateway to the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti.
Manali is famous for adventure sports like skiing, hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, and mountain biking.
Yak skiing is a sport unique to this area. Manali also featured in Time magazine's "Best of Asia" for its "Extreme Yak Sports". Manali also offers hot springs, religious shrines and Tibetan Buddhist temples.
Dalhousie: Hidden under the thick growth of deodars, pine and red and pink rhododendrons, Dalhousie still remains off the beaten track. With the old colonial style chalets peeping through the wooded loops, you may feel like the time here has stood still since long.
Dharamsala: Dharamsala is more famous as the abode of the Dalai Lama. Set against the snow-clad Dhauladhar Mountains, the Tibetan township has spectacular landscape. McLeodganj retains its colonial charm.
